Safety information

Candle making is a warm, rewarding craft — and it involves real heat and open flame. The guidance below ships with every kit. Following it keeps the glow safe.

Hot wax handling

  • Molten wax can reach high temperatures and cause burns. An adult must handle melting and pouring.
  • Use the supplied thermometer and never overheat wax. Never leave melting wax unattended.
  • Work on a stable, heat-safe surface in a ventilated space, away from water (hot wax + water can spit).
  • Keep a lid or baking soda nearby — never use water on a wax fire.

Children & supervision

  • Kits that involve heat are recommended for ages 8+ with constant adult supervision.
  • Younger children must not handle hot wax, the pouring jug, the melting spoon or flames.
  • Even the Kids DIY Safe Kit, which uses lower-temperature wax, requires an adult to melt and pour.
  • Keep all materials, wicks and small parts away from infants and pets.

Burning your finished candle

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and never burn near anything flammable.
  • Keep away from curtains, drafts, children and pets. Burn on a heat-resistant surface.
  • Trim the wick to about 5mm before each burn; don't burn for more than 4 hours at a time.
  • Stop burning when about 1cm of wax remains. Extinguish fully and let cool before moving.

Beeswax allergy

  • Beeswax allergies are rare but real, particularly for people sensitive to bee products or propolis.
  • If you have a known bee-product allergy, check with a healthcare professional before handling.
  • Stop using the product and wash the area if you notice skin irritation, redness or itching.
  • Fragrance oils are for candle making only — not for skin contact, ingestion or therapeutic use.

In an emergency: for a small wax fire, smother it with a lid or baking soda — never water. For burns, cool under running water for 20 minutes and seek medical advice if serious. Keep emergency numbers to hand when working with heat.
